All horses and donkeys should be vaccinated against tetanus and we recommend a vaccination for influenza (flu) as well.
Additional vaccines are necessary for horses travelling to or between other countries.
A course of two injections four to eight weeks apart in foals from the age of four months.
First booster vaccination is one year after the primary course.
Subsequent boosters are given every two years.
For horses which compete at shows or are travelling, their flu vaccines must be kept up to date. They can not be overdue even by one day.
Foals and lapsed horses vaccines can start from six months of age with a primary course of two injections, four to six weeks apart.
A third injection must be given five to seven months after the second injection.
At Knotts Yard Veterinary Practice we try to send out booster reminders, but clients must be responsible for keeping their horse's vaccinations up to date.
