This vettings service is also known as 'prior to purchase' examinations. The aim is to minimise the risk of buying an unsuitable or unsound horse.
There are two types of vetting, a Stage 2, or a Stage 5, previously known as 2 star or 5 star.
The horse is examined all over at rest and is trotted up for soundness.
This examination takes under an hour.
As above, but the horse is also ridden, physically exerted, rested and trotted up for soundness.
This examination is therefore more thorough and can take up to two hours.
A blood sample is recommended to be taken at both types of vetting. This has an additional cost but the benefits are that the blood is stored for six months and can be later tested for drugs which may have masked a problem on the day of the vetting.
A certificate is issued for the horse passing the Pre-Purchase Examination. Some insurance companies like to have a copy of this before insuring the horse.
Marcus is also qualified and registered to carry out riding school inspections.
